Optometry Director Department: Optometry Program: Health Systems Reports To: Health Systems Director Supervises: Optometrist and Optometry Manager Employment Status: Full-Time FLSA Status: Exempt Schedule: 40 Hours/52 Weeks Preference: TERO Ordinance 2017-01, P.L. 93-638 Job Summary The Optometry Director responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of clinical services to our customers (un'ina). The Optometry Director examines un'inas' eyes, test their sight, give advice on visual problems and prescribe and fit spectacles or contact lenses when needed. The Optometry Director is trained to recognize diseases of the eye, such as glaucoma and cataracts, as well as general health conditions such as diabetes. The Optometry Director will refer un'inas to medical practitioners when necessary, as well as sometimes sharing the care of un'inas with chronic conditions. The Optometry Director is accountable to ensure their practice is operated as specified in grants and contracts in accordance with applicable statutes and regulations, the Tribes' polices and procedures, and professional ethics. Essential Functions Communicate with patients to get detailed case histories and check for signs and symptoms of general health conditions (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, etc.) Examining the eyes of un'inas of all ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality or vision defects Using specialized equipment for diagnosis and testing Prescribing medications and treatments as permitted by state laws Providing pre and post-operative care for un'inas undergoing cataract and refractive surgery procedures where indicated Issuing prescriptions for spectacles or contact-lenses Fitting and checking prescribed lenses in order to correct vision defects Writing referral communications to doctors and communicating with other medical practitioners and sometimes sharing the care of un'inas with chronic ophthalmic conditions Fulfilling continuing education requirements Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance It is the intent of this job description to highlight the essential functions of the position; however, it is not an all-inclusive list. Physical Requirements Stand or Sit (Stationary position) Walk )Move, Traverse) Use hands/fingers to handle or feel (Operate, Activate, Use, Prepare, Inspect, Place, Detect, Position) Climb (stairs/ladders) or balance (Ascend/Descend, Work atop, Traverse) Stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl (Position self (to), Move) Talk/hear (Communicate, Detect, Converse with, Discern, Convey, Express oneself, Exchange information) See (Detect, Determine, Perceive, Identify, Recognize, Judge, Observe, Inspect, Estimate, Assess) Pushing or Pulling Repetitive Motion Hazards and Atmospheric Conditions None OSHA Categories Category I - Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissu e Equipment and Tools List Equipment used for job: Computer, copier, fax, scanner, and other office equipment List Tools: Specialized optometry tools and equipment Travel Loca l In-State Out-of-State Qualifications Education Doctorate degree in Optometry Successful passage of all parts of National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) National Board Exam Experience Sucessful completion of one (1) year accredited optometric residency program preferred Three (3) to five (5) years of experience Preferred Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities License/Certification C urrent Alaska State Optometry License in good standing Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy Special Skills Successful passage of Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease (TMOD) special examination preferred The ability to understand and apply scientific principles and methods Critical thinking abilities with a high degree of accuracy Excellent problem solving skills Good organizational and administrative skills The ability to keep up to day with scientific and technological developments Attention to detail Manual dexterity The ability to do repetitive tasks Strong interpersonal and communication skills Professional demeanor Strong ethical and moral standards Ability to work in a team setting Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others Ability to multi-task, work independently, and meet deadlines This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, (ICPA).
