They begin the examination procedure and continue to assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis and treatment phases. Not only are our technicians a master of time management and critical thinking, they are also rock stars in offering an excellent experience every time to our Foster Heroes. Our Foster Veterinary Technicians are compassionate with their communication, keep a cool composure under pressure and thrive on teamwork. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Provides compassionate care to patients. Performs all duties in accordance with shelter medical policies and procedures. Utilizes basic animal handling and restraint, performs Fear Free handling techniques. Obtains a complete and thorough medical history from the Foster Hero, and communicate that information with the staff veterinarian. Perform physical examinations on all animals, identify and record any observations. Work with veterinarian to determine if pet is an adoption candidate or if further medical attention is needed. Administer any necessary vaccines, preventatives, medications, or treatments as directed by veterinarian. Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, ear cytology's, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records. Collect, prepare, and submit samples to outgoing vendors and log appropriately. Shoot and log radiographs adhering to all required safety procedures. Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the Foster Hero. Discharges patients on the veterinarian's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state. Counsels Foster Heroes on various aspects of animal care; proper care and procedures that should be followed at home, ensures follow up appointments are made. Prepares and maintains the exam room and treatment areas, including keeping all clinic areas clean and orderly, restocking supplies as needed. Assists other staff members as required and maintains a positive, cooperative relationship Other Duties The duties listed above are intended as a general illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. Qualifications High school diploma/GED/preferred Completion of a veterinary assistant or technician program (preferred), experience may substitute for education. Experience: Minimum of 6 months of experience working as veterinary assistant or technician in a veterinary clinic/hospital setting. Education may substitute for experience. Must know phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, endocrinology, pharmacology and perform safe and humane animal handling. Language Skills: Able to speak, read and write English; Spanish language helpful. Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical skills. Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Explorer; able to learn other software programs as necessary. Proficiency with or able to learn/use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment). Other Skills, Abilities and Qualifications: Regular attendance and punctuality is required. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
