Reports To: Principal Overview: Civitas Education Partners, (CEP) exists to provide equal access to opportunities that break the cycle of poverty by leading and supporting K-12 college preparatory schools. CEP is a school management organization that operates four campuses of Chicago International Charter School (CICS), CICS Ralph Ellison High School, CICS Northtown Academy High School, CICS Wrightwood Elementary School. Position Summary: Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, Illinois State law regarding nurse practice, Civitas/district/state board of education policies and procedures and Informed by the school's mission. The nurse coordinates a comprehensive school health program including the delivery of services to students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. The nurse actively participates with colleagues in school improvement activities, teaming, and collaboration. The school nurse will maintain all appropriate documentation and records mandated by regulation and district policy. Duties and Responsibilities: Coordination: Develops and administers a comprehensive school health program Collects and analyzes epidemiological and other school health information and makes recommendations based upon statistical data Establishes and maintains an accident/injury prevention program to facilitate school safety. Assesses the health and safety needs of the school environment in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, implementing the Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan and other interventions as indicated. Establishes a communicable disease prevention and control program in cooperation with local and state public health agencies. Manages school health records in accordance with Illinois School Student Records Act, providing efficient retrieval of information and other related archival responsibilities. Participates in Child-find programs and establishes and manages health screening programs according to state mandates and guidelines. Participates in the development of health-related policies and procedures in compliance with state mandates and current health practices. Develops and maintains healthcare plans for students who need special nursing interventions during the school day. Provides intervention in times of school crisis, i.e. death, suicide, traumatic events. Coordinates and assists with the State and Federal mandated screenings and provides follow-up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth and development, and other physical impairments. Teaching: Provides staff in-service programs on health topics including bloodborne pathogens and the district crisis management plan. Provides health related classroom instruction when necessary. Provide in-service to staff regarding students with specific medical diagnosis that require support during the school day. Provides school staff with current information about students' health concerns and care on a confidential need-to-know basis. Provides needed health education in the classroom so students are better prepared to deal with the many issues affecting youth. Provides students with learning opportunities that promote individual and community health. Develops school wide programs to address or prevent health and wellness issues. Health Office Management: Maintains a user-friendly and organized health services facility conducive to confidential communications and services. Works with the Student Services Team Leader to purchase and maintain health and OSHA supplies and equipment as indicated for the health office and school. Manages and makes recommendations for the health services annual budget. Develops the medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of the medication given at school. Ensures that the school maintains an appropriate number of AED and other emergency medical supplies. Communication: Maintains communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of students. Tracks appropriate information in the school-wide computer system. Initiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community Acts as a liaison between home and school by communicating with parents regarding students' health and safety needs and developing plans to meet those needs at school. Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues Follow up on homebound students needing related health care services. Identifies resources and information about services in the community and provides these services to students and parents. Special Education: Participates as a member of the Student Services Team in the identification, evaluation, and placement of students in special education programs. Writes health component section of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) as indicated. Recommends modification of the school program for students who require accommodations due to a health deficiency. Completes and presents health histories as part of case study evaluations. Develops and maintains current health care plans for students who need special nursing interventions during the school day, including administration of medications. Recommends modifications in the school program for students who require accommodations because of health concerns. Provides health counseling to parents of special education students, and provides individual and group health counseling to special education students. Professional Growth: Maintain a current knowledge of development in the field of education in general and nursing in particular, by reading journals, attending conferences and workshops, and taking classes. Participates in health related community activities as a representative of the School District. Participates as a member of the faculty on District committees and professional association activities. Actively participate in the professional growth supervision process as outlined in the handbook. Participates in the Civitas Schools Supervision & Evaluation Plan. Administrative: Supervise assigned students as required by your schedule. Attend and participate in scheduled meetings, in-service training, and staffings. Maintain performance of duties consistent with the mission, philosophy and approved procedures of Civitas Schools. Other duties as assigned within the framework of the role and the collective bargaining agreement in effect. Travel Requirements: Travel between school buildings for IEP and 504 Meetings as needed Attend off-site meetings as needed Reflects, supports, and promotes the mission and vision of the school as well as the principles of D.E.I.: Demonstrates preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds. Supports the creation of inclusive, identity-affirming spaces for students. Implements professional practice and responsibilities, demonstrating cultural competence. Implements D.E.I principles in interactions with members of the school community. Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nursing (Required) Professional Educator License with School Support Personnel (Required) School Nurse Endorsement (Required) Registered Nurse for the State of Illinois (Required) Certified instructor for American Heart Association CPR and AED (Required) Bilingual Spanish/English, Urdu/English, Arabic/English (Strongly Preferred) Salary and Benefits Civitas Education Partners provides a highly competitive salary and benefits package.
