East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring program (EPATT) Reading Instructor ABOUT EPATT: The East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring program (EPATT) is an established non- profit organization that has made a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of students from East Palo Alto since 1988. Through partnerships with families, schools, and the local agencies, EPATT promotes leadership, discipline, hard work, and excellence among its 110 Kindergarten through 12th grade students. EPATT strives to enrich the academic, athletic, and social skills of its participants through its academic year program. Students receive academic instruction that focuses on reading, math, writing, and critical thinking skills, and participate in a variety of hands-on learning activities. EPATT’s academic program is located on the Stanford University campus in the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. JOB TITLE: Elementary School Group Reading Instructor QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: EPATT is seeking energetic, committed, motivated, creative, fun-loving instructors for our elementary school program. The ideal candidate is innovative and has a passion for project-based learning and fostering critical thinking skills in students. • Bachelor’s degree required • Experience with small group academic instruction in literacy • Experience or understanding of reading leveling and assessment programs such Development Reading Assessment, Fountas & Pinnell, and/or Lexile • Experience with behavior management for 1st-5th grade students • Familiar California Common Core Language & Literacy standards in 1st – 5th grades EXPECTATIONS & DUTIES • Execute EPATT’s program mission and values in a positive and professional manner • Attend training and orientation (During the week of September 4th). • Instruct from September 11th – October 16th • Work together with the Elementary School Group Coordinator to create easy-to- follow hands-on lesson plans that are engaging yet challenging • Read aloud with small group of 3-4 students • Instruct students on annotation and the use of resources to research for better understanding of texts • Monitor individual progress in vocabulary development • Monitor individual progress in literary skills: critical analysis, prediction, making inferences, incorporating background knowledge • For older students: Provide some study on basic literary devices • Complete reports on individual student progress in vocabulary development, literary skills, and understanding of basic literary devices WORK HOURS AND DATES – September 11th – October 16th • Instructors are expected to be on site from 4:00pm until 6:00pm Tuesday & Thursday • Training will take place the week of September 4th • Instructors are expected to attend weekly staff meetings COMPENSATION Instructors will receive a $750 stipend.
