BCIT’s School of Transportation is seeking a temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE) Shop Maintenance Technician. Responds to requests and trouble calls, completes work orders and provides quality service to the Heavy Equipment, Commercial Transport, Railway and Industrial Material Handling Logistics staff and students. Operates and maintains a variety of wheeled, railway and tracked equipment, carries out scheduled inspections, maintenance and repairs to machinery, equipment, and the railway lab. Coordinates the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) program, makes emergency repairs to a variety of equipment, and identifies requirements to outsource to external vendors. Takes functional direction from the Department Heads and Workshop Tool room Supervisor. Duties and Responsibilities: Responds to work requests and trouble calls, identifies problems and takes corrective action to fix machinery and equipment including preliminary troubleshooting on a variety of machines and equipment, including alternator testers, starter testers, battery load testers, refrigeration units, electrical training aids, hydraulic training aids and components, and driveline training aids and components. Operates, moves, or removes old machinery and equipment, adapts older machinery and equipment to new components and parts, relocates machinery and equipment, and installs and commissions new machinery and equipment. Operates a variety of tracked, wheeled and railway equipment to a high degree of safety within compounds and on campus property. Equipment includes; Trucks, Railcar Mover, and Heavy Duty machines. Repairs and maintains forklifts. Recommends priorities and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance Plan, including items that require inspection and maintenance for regulatory reasons. The Preventative Maintenance Plan duties include but are not limited to: inspecting, cleaning, greasing, lubricating, identifying deficiencies, and taking corrective action and reporting findings.
